Construction Begins on the Brody Jewish Center

Hillel at the University of Virginia is proud to announce that it has begun construction on the Brody Jewish Center.   The Brody Jewish Center will allow Hillel at the University of Virginia to continue to grow, and it will enable Hillel at UVa to become a premier destination for Jewish students.  The Brody Jewish Center will become the focal point of Jewish life on Grounds, will serve as a symbol of the strength and vibrancy of Jewish life at UVa, and provide a home for Jewish students for years to come.

Creating a State of the Art Center for Jewish Student Life on Grounds

Hillel’s current building, built in 1914 as a private home, is now simply too small to accommodate the number of students involved in Jewish life.  Our solution: building a state of the art Center for Jewish Life at the University.

The Brody Jewish Center will create a warm and welcoming destination where Jewish students will be able to study, meet friends informally and attend programs. The expanded facility will feature a dining room which will comfortably seat 180 students, study and lounge space for students and a new expanded kitchen, as well as a chapel, new offices and restrooms.

Ensuring the Future of Jewish Life on Grounds

Thanks to a leadership gift from Dan (CLAS ’73) and Nan Brody and the generosity of alumni, parents and friends, Hillel has already raised $2.4 million toward its $2.8 million goal and has already begun construction.  We expect the project to be completed in February of 2011.

Even as we begin construction, we continue to seek private funding for this important and worthy project. All gifts to our campaign are part of the University of Virginia’s capital campaign and receive full University credit. With your help and support we can reach this goal and ensure the future of Jewish life at UVa.
