2012 Opportunities

Option 1:

Volunteer over Spring Break with the Brody Jewish  Center and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee on a Short-Term Service Program

JDC Short-Term Service Programs are connecting North American young adults to the global Jewish community through 10-day volunteer programs in a Jewish community overseas. 

What do JDC Short-Term Service Programs participants do?
Gain a firsthand understanding of the challenges facing a Jewish community overseas and how JDC is addressing community needs.

  • Engage in a meaningful service project, such as:
    • Refurbishing bomb shelters in Israel
    • Repairing a Jewish community center in Argentina
    • Renovating homes of elderly Jews in Ukraine
  • Connect and build friendships with local Jewish peers
  • Explore what Jewish tradition has to say about service and responsibility to the Jewish people and the world
  • Return home as ambassadors for Jewish needs overseas, ready to mobilize friends, family, and communities to help

PROGRAM INCLUDES:

Option 2: Alternative Break Miami 2010

Hillel/City Year Alternative Break 2012: Serving to Make a Difference

Join other service-minded students from around the country in Los Angeles.  This trip is a partnership between Hillel and City Year and will provide an opportunity to stretch beyond the everyday by coming together through hands-on service, team building and the exploration of social justice and Judaism.

Days will be spent doing volunteer work which may include, but is not limited to, building, painting, tutoring children and serving meals. Participants should be prepared for intense days of hands-on service and be open to experiential learning as a means to increase knowledge about socio-economic and social justice issues.

Following a communal dinner, activities will be planned, and will include campus discussions, speakers, and sightseeing. The week ends with a relaxing, inspiring and restful Shabbat.

DATES: March 4-11, 2012

LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA

COST: $250+ travel to and from location
