Student Groups
Jewish Leadership Council (JLC):
The Jewish Leadership Council is the coalition of Jewish student groups at the University of Virginia. JLC strives to expand and enhance Jewish life at the University of Virginia by ensuring diverse opportunities for Jewish expression, developing student leaders, and promoting a welcoming, pluralistic community. JLC is comprised of the First Year Leadership Development Program, Hoos for Israel, Jewish Education Initiative, Jewish Religious Life Council, Jewish Social Connection, Jewish Social Justice Council, and the Jewish Travel Iniative. First Year Connection (FYC):
First Year Connection was created to provide a link for first year students to both the Jewish and University communities, as well as, provide leadership opportunities in the Jewish community. This competitive program will enable first year students to serve as first year representatives to a Jewish Leadership Council member organization. The program will include monthly social, community service, networking and leadership development forums, where all participants will come together to meet and learn from prominent alumni, parents, University and community members. Hoos for Israel (HFI):
As the University's pro-Israel student organization, Hoos for Israel works to strengthen support for Israel on Grounds through cultural and educational programming. For more information, contact Shoshana Spiro.
Jewish Education Initiative (JEI):
The Jewish Education Initiative creates a wide range of Jewish educational opportunities for the UVa community. Major initiatives include Hoos Studying Torah - a pluralist weekly Torah study group, Holocaust Awareness Committee and programs which provide opportunities to dialogue with other religious communities. Jewish Religious Life Council (JRLC):
The Jewish Religious Life Council is charged with enhancing religious life at the the University and ensuring the such opportunities are welcoming, enjoyable and meaningful for all students. JRLC oversees shabbat and holiday celebrations and undertakes spirituality programming. For more information, contact Conor Farrell.
Jewish Social Connection (JSC):
The Jewish Social Connection aims to provide a comfortable environment for all Jewish students at the University and strengthen the Jewish community through cultural and social programming. JSC events include a monthly dinner series, holiday pot lucks, bar nights and other social programs. For more information, contact Evan Cantor and Freddie Rose.
Jewish Social Justice Council (JSJC):
The Jewish Social Justice Council is a public service and social justice initiative devoted to transforming the culture of the UVa and Charlottesville community through student-led education and advocacy work. The initiative combines Judaism and the Brody Jewish Center's commitment to raising awareness around social justice issues. For more information, contact Amira Beeber.
Hootzpah:
Hootzpah is the Jewish a cappella group on Grounds and is open to anyone interested in learning and performing Jewish music. Specializing in Israeli and Jewish music, as well as popular American songs, Hootzpah is the "voice" of the Jewish community. Hootzpah members come from a variety of backgrounds, but are unified by a love of arranging and performing Jewish music. As the only Jewish a cappella group on Grounds, Hootzpah is honored to perform at events around Grounds, in the Charlottesville Jewish community, and at the Brody Jewish Center.
