Challah for Hunger

The Challah for Hunger UVa chapter was created with the intention of continuous support for an Israeli immigrant community in Nahariya, Israel. Challah for Hunger raises awareness of and money for hunger and disaster relief. 50% of each chapter's profits are donated to the American Jewish World Service's Sudan Relief and Advocacy Fund. The remaining 50% may be donated to an organization chosen by the chapter.

In March of 2011, 18 students participated in an Alternative Spring Break trip with the Brody Jewish Center and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee to Nahariya, Israel. While there, the students refurbished bomb shelters, entry ways to apartment buildings and spent time volunteering with at-risk children.

Upon their return, four of the participants decided to provide additional support to the Nahariya community and specifically, programming for at-risk teens. Every week, with the help from student volunteers, the group bakes challah which is then sold on Grounds. Challah flavors include plain, chocolate chip, sun dried tomato & basil and cinnamon sugar. In their first week of sales, the group made over $100, selling out in just a few short hours.
